The Absa Premiership’s oldest player and all-time leading goalscorer, Siyabonga Nomvethe (above), has announced he will hang up his boots when his current contract at AmaZulu runs out in three months’ time.
The veteran striker, who has played for all three Soweto giants – Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs – as well as spells in Europe with Udinese in Italy and Sweden’s Djurgardens, announced his retirement yesterday morning.
“It’s time for the youngsters to take over. Football is about playing with your heart. I have done my part.
“I’m very happy. It’s time for me to say goodbye,” said the 40-yearold who has scored over 100 Premiership goals in his stellar career.
“I have to thank my wife Nompumelelo, my mother, my whole family … Pro-Sport International, AmaZulu and the supporters and everyone who supported me throughout the years.
“I must also thank my teammates, the coach, former teams and former team-mates. All the coaches at Bafana, team-mates,” he said.
Nomvethe scored 16 goals in 78 appearances for Bafana Bafana. He started his career at the now defunct African Wanderers as a 17-year-old back in 1997.
Usuthu general manager Lunga Sokhela thanked the veteran for his contribution in the few years he has been at the Durban based club.
“I personally take off my hat to Bhele for being a great example for many upcoming youngsters in the sport over the years,” added Sokhela.
