Blue Bulls go green and gold

- Ken Borland

The Blue Bulls only need one more point to make the Currie Cup semifinals, but coach Pote Human wants to make absolutely sure they seal the deal against Western Province at Loftus Versfeld tomorrow as he recalled all four returning Springboks to the squad.

Flank Marco van Staden, scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl and tighthead prop Trevor Nyakane were all named in the starting line-up yesterday, while another halfback, Embrose Papier, will be on the bench.

“We certainly have everything to play for and need all capable hands on deck, so the availability of the four players is very welcome. We are facing a formidable WP side who will also have some Springboks back. They are already in the semifinals, so they will play without fear and that will make them very dangerous opponents. They are a very skilful team with lots of game-breakers and our defence will be tested,” Human said.

Springbok Jamba Ulengo, who has not played since the end of August, returns in place of Duncan Matthews on the wing, but there are no other changes to the team that beat the Pumas in their last outing.

Papier, who had limited Super Rugby opportunities for the Bulls, has played no Currie Cup rugby and will make his debut when he comes off the bench.

Blue Bulls captain Hanro Liebenberg said forward dominance will be vital for the Blue Bulls.

“We will have to dictate the style of play and tempo if we want to be successful. They are quite adept on the counter, so ball-possession will be key if we want to secure the win we need to confirm a semifinal spot,” Liebenberg said.
