Mosimane hits out at Sundowns stars

- Michaelson Gumede

Pitso Mosimane is concerned about Mamelodi Sundowns’ problems in front of goal, which has contributed to them winning just four games in their last 11 matches in all competitions.

At this stage of the season in the previous Absa Premiership campaign, Mamelodi Sundowns had scored 13 goals in contrast to this season’s nine goals in their opening eight games.

“We have the players, we have the play but we don’t have the termination,” said Mosimane.

“We need to terminate and make sure the good play converts into goals.

“We are not as high- scoring as we normally are. We lack goals, we don’t lack the play. If we try to score at least two goals out of four chances, the game will become different but when it is 1-0 you are encouraging the opponents to say this game is still on.

“We need shrewd people, we need shrewdness in front of goal because some teams might equalise,” Mosimane added.

While the defending champions are six points behind pace-setters Bidvest Wits, they have played two games fewer than Gavin Hunt’s Students. But based on past experiences, Mosimane is careful not to read much into games in hand, describing them asa “potential advantage”.

“When we lost the title the season before the last one we had three games in hand and we drew all the three games. Those things do not matter, games in hand are not games won, you need to get the points. You can say it is an advantage but it is really just potential advantage, it is not real advantage.”

The reason why Downs are lagging behind in the league is because they were competing in the Caf Champions League and some of their domestic games took a back seat.

But Mosimane seems to have a way to work around this: “If the league games are played on weekends and the cup games are played during the week it will be better. If you are out of the cup you don’t play during the week, but over the weekend we all play. But you can’t easily do that because the PSL wants sponsorship and it is important for the league to be well sponsored.”
