Bonuses not be all, end all
With big bonuses up for grabs for Banyana Banyana at the Caf Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana, goalkeeper Andile Dlamini (above) says their minds are not on the money, but doing well at the tournament.
Sponsors Sasol have put up a performance bonus of R1 260 000 if they finish in third place, which will be R60 000 per player, R 1 575 000 if they finish as runners-up, which calculates to R75 000 a player and a huge R2 520 000 should they win the tournament, which will be R160 000 for each player.
“We have to appreciate what our sponsors are doing for us, they continue to treat us very well. We are very glad with what they are doing for us. But again, we owe this (winning the tournament and qualifying for the World Cup) to ourselves,” said Dlamini.
“We need to do everything in our power to ensure we give a good performance and get positive results. The main objective is to make everyone proud and most importantly, to make ourselves proud, the rest will follow.”
Looking at their group, Banyana will be going up against Nigeria, Zambia and Equatorial Guinea, who were reinstated in the competition after Caf lifted a ban on them competing.
Equatorial Guinea were initially found guilty of playing an ineligible player in Annette Jacky Messomo, but it was later decided that she was actually eligible.
