DA leader Mmusi Maimane is determined to squeeze President Cyril Ramaphosa over his son’s alleged handsome payment by Bosasa, a government service provider, and has submitted two applications to gain access to how the young man nailed the lucrative tender and how money exchanged hands.

Political analyst Lesiba Teffo said the actions “will present an ideal opportunity for Ramaphosa to deal with this matter for if he does not do that it will fan the flames of doubt and suspicion”.

Maimane submitted the applications in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Paia) to enable him to have access to the information on how Andile Ramaphosa, the president’s son, was allegedly paid R500 000 by Bosasa, which was renamed African Global Group, for a service he rendered to the state supplier.

Last week, in an answer to a parliamentary question by Maimane, Ramaphosa confirmed his son had an agreement with Bosasa for providing a consultation service. This service was also to other companies, including foreign firms.

The president said everything was above board and vowed that should there be any hint of corruption, he would personally take his son to the police station to be charged. He said he instructed all his children never to do business with government or any state-owned enterprise or he would ensure they were jailed.

This week, Maimane accused the president of not telling the truth, hence he submitted the Paia applications. He said he wanted to ensure that the president’s son was not given preferential treatment when he was given the contract.

During the parliamentary presidential question time, Maimane brandished a paper which he claimed was proof from Global CEO Gavin Watson showing that he was asked to pay the money to Andile. Last week, the president’s son himself vehemently denied that he was ever paid the money by the company.
