Lerena delighted as Cascapedia draws No 4 for Summer Cup

There was the usual mix of delight disappointment at Wednesday night’s draw function for the R2-million G-Bets Gauteng Summer Cup.

The Grade 1 race will be run over 2000m at Turffontein on the Standside track on Saturday 1 December.

Mike de Kock will saddle five horses and his runners had mixed fortunes. There was great delight when Cascapedia and Takingthepeace drew Nos 4 and 5 respectively while his other runners, Kilrain, Like A Panther and Noble Secret and ended up with draws Nos 12, 14 and 16 respectively.

Assistant trainer Mathew de Kock said the draws do not concern him particularly. “It makes a big difference over the shorter trips around the turn but over 2000m it is still possible to position yourself well and win from wide draws.”

Gavin Lerena rides Cascapedia who is now 5-1 joint favourite with stable companion Takingthepeace. He was delighted with No 4 draw, which he drew himself. “I could not have wished for a better draw,“he commented, adding that one must not read too much into her last run where she went down a short head to Secret Potion in a five-horse race. “The idea was to ride her more handily for that race. She will be spot on for this race.”

Both trainer Sean Tarry and jockey Lyle Hewitson were delighted with their No 6 draw for Tilbury Fort. “Now we just have to see if he sees out 2000m,” said Tarry who is buoyed by the fact that his charge produced the fastest 400m to finish in the Charity Mile.
