More works of Zeelie under hammer, with furniture, coins and jewellery also up for grabs.
Bernardi Auctioneers of Pretoria is proud to host the retrospective exhibition of Adelio Zagni Zeelie, which opens tomorrow, at 11am. The unique collection will also be included in their auction of SA art, furniture, collectables, jewellery and numismatics on Saturday, December 1 at 10am.
A total of 324 lots are under the hammer and of particular interest to collectors and decorators will be the one-of-a-kind hand-decorated furniture pieces from the Zeelie collection, as well as a selection of paintings by the forgotten master of painted and decorated furniture.
This will be followed by numismatics at 11am, which includes a selection of ZAR, SA Mint, world coins and generals from the Anglo-Boer-War medallions. Featured are a scarce Commemorative Austrian Mint 50 years Association of the War Blind from the Salzburg Regional Group, a USA 1878 $20 21ct gold coin, and a Royal Mint Belize Gold Proof collection – 50th Anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein.
Estate jewellery highlights include a gold ladies charm bracelet, an opalescent pearl necklace, an 1898 ZAR 6 tickey gold coin bracelet and a vintage 18ct yellow gold emerald and diamond-set ladies dress ring.
Ari D Norman of London pillboxes, scent bottles and Bilston Battersea Halycon days enamels should all be interesting stocking-fillers for your significant other.
Another option is assorted antique and vintage pocket and wristwatches – including a Victorian 18ct yellow gold cased Hunter, gent’s Omega Geneve automatic 18ct and stainless steel wristwatches, a Tag Heuer Chronograph Calibre 16 and Rolex oyster perpetual wristwatches, complemented by Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Classique Solitaire, Parker and Watermans pens.
A select amount of furniture, embellishments and collectables follows with a Modellers of Antique Furniture Honduras mahogany large Georgian style breakfront console table, an American oak roll-top desk, a commemorative Voortrekker Vredefort Eeufees post box, 19th Century Cape yellowwood spenskas, stinkwood and rooi els Regency baby’s cot, feeding chair and trekbed, assorted kitchenalia and a transitional Tulbagh riempie bench.
Look at a Chinese export carved rosewood and mother-of-pearl inlaid salon suite, tea table, four matching corner chairs and a display stand. A fine Victorian brass case from Troughton & Simms, London Celestial table-top library telescope, a copper diver’s helmet and a Mike Kingsley Editions El-Cid weapons display case will enhance both classic and modern interiors.
The SA Art & Sculpture starts at 1pm with highlights being two Hugo Naude landscapes – Namaqualand and Near Worcester – a Robert Hodgins mixed media portrait and one of his humorous wall plates. Zakkie Eloff wildlife oils and sepia studies, Terence McCaw, Cecil Skotnes, Chris Tugwell land- and seascapes and a JEA Volschenk Montagu scene will also be auctioned. Other works include bronzes by Kobus la Grange, Michael Fleischerand and Eileen Lipkin complement abstract screenprints of Lionel Abrams, Fred Schimmel and Walter Battiss. Contemporary artists Wendy Malan, MJ Lourens, Willem Pretorius, Ranko Pudi, Karin Preller and Craig Bone also feature.
