The tyre-shredding, noisy and smoke billowing spectacle of Gymkhana GRiD will return to Carnival City on the East Rand this Saturday, with international and local drivers on the entry list.
As was the case at last year’s inaugural event, the competition will be held on two mirror-image circuits in the parking lot, catering for two competitors at a time.
The 48 competing cars will be divided into classes for two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles.
Heading up the all-wheel drive entry list will be Swedish World Rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson and his Volkswagen team-mate Petter Solberg, in their 400kW VW Polo vehicles.
They will be challenged by overseas contenders like Russian Dmitrij Sribnyj (Subaru Impreza), Brits Jonathan Buck (Subaru Impreza WRX), James Stephen (Subaru Impreza) and Oliver Bennett (MINI Cooper), plus Norwegian Oliver Solberg (Citroen Xsara), Omanian Mazin Al Shaibani (Mitsubishi Evolution) and Pole Robert Dzirba (Subaru WRX).
South Africans in the category include Chett Meyer (Subaru WRX), Anton Wannenburg (Subaru Impreza), Marco Ferreira (Subaru WRX), Tian De Klerk (Subaru Impreza) and Wayne Hay (Subaru Impreza).
A huge crowd drawcard will be American ace Ken Block, who will do exhibition runs in his 1 000kW Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2.
Topping the two-wheel drive category will be reigning category world champion Luke Woodham from Britain in his turbocharged Nissan 200sx.
Other overseas contenders will include Brits Steve Biagion (Nissan S13i), Steven McConnell (BMW E36), Tessa Whittock (Nissan Skyline R33 GT-S), Danny Cross (Nissan S14) and Mike Newland (Nissan S13), plus drivers like Japan’s Daigo Saito (Chevrolet Corvette), Norwegian Christian Bakkerud (Nissan Cefiro) and Croatian Marko Palijan (Nissan 350Z).
Top South Africans in the mix will include Jason Webb (Ford “Monstang”), Eric Van Eyssen (Nissan S14), Bronny White (Nissan S13), Kyle Van Dyk (Nissan 350Z), Zaeed Rajah (Nissan S13), Christopher Long ( Toyota Supra) and Carl Van As (Subaru Impreza).
