Fillies firing at Kenilworth

It was overall a pretty average day’s racing at Kenilworth on Saturday, but a couple of debutantes are certainly worth putting on your ‘horses to follow’ list in bold black type.

Just like last year, Candice Bass-Robinson appears to have a smart group of juvenile fillies, and Cousin Liz seems certain to prove one of the best of them.

This Mario Ferreira-owned R2.9 million yearling attracted strong betting support in Race 1, going off in the red at 9-10 after opening at double those odds.

She duly cruised to victory under a hands-and-heels ride, and jockey Aldo Domeyer was full of enthusiasm afterwards.

Bass-Robinson said: “She has a bright future, and will probably stay here for the winter and skip the KZN season.”

Form horse Fluttering scored an overdue win in Race 3, virtually making all.

Runner up Boomps A Daisy (Aus) is the one to take out of the race though.

She was slow away and raced green, but made up six or seven lengths over the final 200m and would have won going away in a couple more strides.

Marcus partnered filly Run Fox Run for his sponsors Ridgemont Highlands and Brett Crawford in the final race.

She had bolted up on debut, and did the same again in highly impressive fashion at FM 78 level.
