ACHIEVEMENT: HE SCORED IN EVERY GAME IN JANUARY

- Michaelson Gumede

Without even going through the archives to check statistics, one can confidently say there are not many players in the history of the Premier Soccer League who have scored in every game they played in one month.

Mwape Musonda is one such player who has banged in a goal or two in every game he played for Black Leopards in January.

Musonda just could not stop scoring last month, so much so that he has impressed the majority of our readers, as the Zambian international has been voted the

Phakaaathi Player of the Month – the first this year. Musonda has beaten off some tough opposition in the form of Bafana Bafana internationals Themba Zwane and Thamsanqa Mkhize, and his fellow Zambian Justin Shonga.

Leopards opened the year with a Polokwane derby against Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. To be fair, that is not where the Musonda goal feast began. The 27-year-old was simply picking up where he left off in December, having scored in a 3-1 win over AmaZulu and a 1-1 draw with Maritzburg United.

Fast forward six days after the Polokwane derby, Musonda and his team-mates were up against SuperSport United. Musonda was again the hero, netting twice to sink Matsatsantsa. A brace would please any striker but Musonda was disappointed not to complete his hat trick, which would have been the first this season.

Nonetheless, the Zambian star continued his scoring form as he went on to rescue a point for Leopards against Golden Arrows.

After that brilliant performance, Musonda faced Orlando Pirates, and like many before him, he wanted to prove a point. He scored the equaliser to take the Buccaneers into extra-time in the Nedbank Cup as Lidoda Duvha won on penalties. Upon scoring his goal, he did not celebrate.

All of those goals have put Musonda in good company as he is the joint top goalscorer in the Absa Premiership with Bloemfontein Celtic’s Tshegofasto Mabaso, tied on eight goals each, with the duo of Mothobi Mvala and Siphelele Mthembu on their heels with seven strikes each.
