TESTING TIME. TARRY’S CHARGE MUST PROVE DEBUT WIN WAS NOT A FLASH IN THE

- Jack Milner

Filly Mawsool takes on the boys.

Trainer Sean Tarry has been producing a succession of debut winners over the past few months and now it is time to see whether they can continue their good form in their next start.

Tomorrow Tarry saddles Ikigai in Race 7, a Graduation Plate over 1450m on the Inside track at Turffontein. This three-year-old son of Vercingetorix, a sire who has started to leave his mark on South African racing, found massive betting support on debut over 1000m on the Standside track on 7 September to go off as the 6-10 favourite.

He did not disappoint, coming from more than five lengths off them at the 400m mark to win going away by 1.75 lengths.

Based on breeding he should have no problem with the additional 450m but this is his first run around the turn and the opposition is clearly a lot stronger. But he is nicely drawn at No 4 and has in-form Raymond Danielson up.

The best-handicapped runner is Green Haze from the Alec Laird stable.

Unfortunately he has had his problems but the connections eventually decided to geld him in May this year.

He will be a lot fitter on this occasion and will prefer the extra distance. He has placed in both of his starts at this course and will have the services of former champion jockey S’manga Khumalo.

Mike de Kock saddles threeyear-old filly Mawsool who has some decent form over this distance, but has only run against members of her own sex.

Nevertheless, she is perfectly drawn in barrier No 2 and carries just 51kg.
