Wits breeze past Young Buffaloes in Confed Cup

Bidvest Wits advanced to the next round of the Caf Confederat­ion Cup after beating eSwatini side Young Buffaloes 3-0, making it 3-1 on aggregate in the second leg of the first round clash at the Bidvest Stadium last night.

Buffaloes came into the country with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, but Wits took control of the game from the opening whistle.

Wits, with Gift Motupa and Carl Lark upfront were in a goal scoring mood, but missed chances in the opening stages of the game.

Motupa finally broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute.

The striker got his brace five minutes later, giving the home side a comfortabl­e 2-0 lead just before the half-hour mark.

In the 34th minute, some sloppy defending in the Wits halve almost saw Buffaloes pull one back, but Phiwayinkh­osi Dlamini’s shot went wide.

Wits could have extended their lead four minutes into the second half, but Domingo was denied by the upright.

Wits suffered a huge blow in the 63rd minute after Keagan Ritchie was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle.

However, Wits continued to be stronger than their visitors, but failed to add to their goal tally.

The home side finally got their third goal through Terrence Dzvukamanj­a after some brilliant work from another substitute Mxolisi Macuphuin the later stages of the game to seal the win.

Wits will now shift their focus back into the Premier Soccer League with a meeting against Chippa United away from home on Tuesday.
