Raiders dominate the Algoa Cup field

-

The chances of a local trainer regaining his or her grip on the Algoa Cup on Sunday looks bleak indeed as a group of trainers from the Western Cape, in particular, descend on Fairview Racecourse.

There is a strong field for the R350,000 Socrasync Toro Ya Africa Algoa Cup, (Listed) Powered by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, over 2000m, which sees former champion trainer Justin Snaith, Brett Crawford and Andre Nel in town with some very talented horses.

In addition, there will be the full Kotzen family of trainers, Glen from Cape Town, Nathan, who is based in Durban, and Sharon, who will be on home soil, with runners in this event.

Snaith is represented by Knights Templar with Richard

Fourie up, and Platinum Prince, who will be ridden by Piere Strydom.

It was a combination of Strydoms who last won this race for the hometown when Piere led the field on Surfin’ USA for brother Jacques in 2009.

Crawford saddles American Landing, who has not won a race since lifting the East Cape Derby title in May last year.

Andre Nel has Crome Yellow and Run Red, and it is the former, with Greg Cheyne up, who looks the pick of the pair.

The local entry is headed up by Mangrove, trained by Yvette Bremner.

The weekend of racing kicks of on Friday with the running of the Listed Racing Association Stakes for three-year-olds over 1600m on the Polytrack.
