An auction to suit all tastes

PRIVATE COLLECTION: A HUGE ARRAY OF POTTERY AND CERAMICS ARE ON THE BLOCK

An art, collectabl­es, furniture and estate jewellery auction – the last Bernardi Auctioneer­s will hold this year – starts at 10am tomorrow at the auction house’s gallery, 65 Thomson Street, Colbyn, Pretoria.

The two-session auction caters for every taste and pocket.

Session one has 160 lots of silverware, electropla­te, metalware, furniture, numismatic­s and estate jewellery, as well as clocks and pocket and wrist watches.

Of particular interest is a Portuguese silver canteen of cutlery containing the 147 pieces of a setting for 12, as well as a Victorian lady’s Necessaire de Voyage (overnight bag) as well as Kosta Boda and David Reade glass objects.

Collectabl­es and clocks include a Matthew Norman oval carriage clock, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Swiss Atmos clock and a fusee post office timepiece.

A small selection of furniture features a Georgian-style twin-pedestal dining table, Victorian loo table, gentleman’s knee-hole writing desk and a set of seven unique Herbert Baker Tulbagh-style stinkwood dining chairs.

Numismatic­s and estate jewellery, with SAM short proof sets, commemorat­ive coins and USA silver dollars will come next.

The estate jewellery is highlighte­d by an 18ct white gold-and-diamond set, a 8.5ct emerald-cut tanzanite pendant, an assortment of lady’s diamond and gemstone dress and fashion rings, pendants and silver pieces.

Session two at 12.30pm offers SA pottery and ceramics from the private collection of Jan and Mariana Nel.

Featured pieces include pieces by Ian Glenny, Alice Heysteck, Tim Morris, Hyme Rabinowitz, Andrew Walford and a Rorkes Drift jug, by Ephraim Ziqubu.

A highlight will be a Tim Morris dinner service and various large signature pieces of his glazed stoneware and porcelain.

Thereafter, 98 lots of SA and European art and sculpture will include works by – amongst others – Raymond Andrews, Philip Badenhorst, Walter Battiss, Adriaan Boshoff, Errol Boyley, Bettie Cilliers-Barnard, Gabriel de Jongh, George Enslin and Titta Fasciotti.

Shoppers will get an opportunit­y to bid on Piet Grobler cartoons, Michael Heyns, Amos Langdown, Erich Mayer, Christiaan Nice, Pieter van der Westhuizen iconic etchings and an amusing Man with Chicken mixed media, Derric van Rensburg and Ignatius Marx Landscapes, Louis van Heerden and Chris Tugwell still-lifes and contempora­ry Diane Victor etchings and aquatints.

The session is complement­ed by works from Italian artists Augusto Bompiano, Franco Rispoli and Alfonso Simonetti rustic landscapes, with etchings by Julius Komjati and SA bronzes by Wilfred Delport, Stephen Sutherland and Sanna Swart.

Lots catalogued can be viewed from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow at Bernardi Auctioneer­s’ gallery, 65 Thomson Street, Colbyn, Pretoria.
