There’s drag racing at night that’s open to all road car owners.

The Rock Raceway in Brakpan will end its 2019 activities with a three-day motorsport extravaganza, starting this long weekend. On Saturday, the oval circuit will offer a full programme of tintop and single seater competition.

There will be races for supersaloons, 1 660cc saloons, stock rods, two-litre saloons, midgets, ninja karts and 125cc karts.

Meanwhile, a large field of near standard saloon cars will tackle Formula N races on a circuit comprising the oval, its infield and a twisty tar section next to the oval.

Rounding out the evening will be a stunt that had not yet been specified at the time of writing.

Patrons will be able to purchase “suicide rides” in drifting cars at R100 per trip.

Admission will cost R80 for adults and R30 for children between the ages of six and 12 years.

The gates will be open from 10am with practice sessions throughout the day. Racing proper will commence at 3pm.

On Sunday evening, the venue will offer night drag racing on its 200m drag strip. It’s open to all road car owners.

The events return to the earliest form of drag racing. There are no electronic timing devices involved.

It’s straightforward heads-up racing, started by a man with two flags. The first car over the finish line is the winner and that is also indicated by a man with a flag.

Competing costs R50 per car and you turn up with your vehicle and a crisis cap, select who you wish to race against and challenge them in the pits. You can do as many runs as you want to.

The gates will be open from 2pm, with racing to start at 4pm.

Spectator admission will cost R20 per adult and R10 per child.

On Monday the venue will offer its annual spinning versus drifting clash, with the crowd to decide who wins.

It is a lot of tyre-shredding, noisy excitement, and well worth a trip to the East Rand.

The gates will be open from 10am, with racing from noon.

Admission for adults will cost R80, plus R50 per child, with parking at R20 per car.
