POOR FORM: DROPPING POINTS AGAINST LOWER SIDES

SuperSport United have always had their way against the so-called big teams of the Absa Premiership, but they have tended to have rings run around them when they play the smaller teams. This is something that defender Siyabonga Nhlapo says he and his teammates, led by head coach Kaitano Tembo, will need to diagnose and find a remedy for.

“It has been a big concern since I got here, it is my third season and that is always our hiccup. It is one thing that we need to work hard on because the teams that are below us always seem to give us trouble but the ones above us, we always have a way out and find ways to beat them. As a group I think we can find a solution,” said Nhlapho.

SuperSport do have one of the bigger sides to play today, when they take on Bidvest Wits at the Mbombela Stadium, in what is a home match for Matsatsantsa. Both sides are on 34 points in fourth and fifth place respectively in the Absa Premiership table. But Wits have four games in hand on SuperSport, and as such a far better chance of challenging Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates for the title.

“We know them (Wits) very well, we know what they can do. They are in a good position chasing the league and they have games in hand. We will also try and get the best result because in the last two games we have not been doing well in the league and we have been knocked out of the

Nedbank Cup,” he added.

SuperSport are some distance from the summit of the log but the experienced campaigner says it possible for Matsatsantsa of Pretoria to catch up with leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

“You can’t throw in the towel because the league has proven in the last few seasons that it can be decided in the last few games and a lot can happen. Those teams above us are not guaranteed wins. There are still teams who they are going to play against and those teams are also fighting their own battles so you never know.

“With eight games to go, the next two games are the most important regardless of the other results elsewhere. We need to turn the corner because we have been away and we did not get results on the road but I don’t think we can be demotivated in Mbombela.”
