Two bankers on Turffontein card

Magic School has been running against the likes of Summer Pudding in her last two starts and is now weighted to come home lonely in Race 7 at Turffontein tomorrow, an Allowance Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m on the Inside track.

Trained by Gary Alexander, this three-year-old daughter of Philanthropist has contested four consecutive feature races and has placed in three of them. She ran against the colts in the Grade 3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m last November and finished second, beaten one length by Frosted Gold. Behind her that day were Riverstown, Eden Roc and Shango.

Her next run was in the Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes in January where she went down just 0.15 lengths to stable companion Mount Laurel. Splitting them was Victoria Paige with Spiritofthegroove just behind her in fourth.

She then went into the Gauteng Fillies Guineas but lost any chance she might have had by rearing at the start and missing the break by some two lengths. She was still only beaten 5.25 lengths by Summer Pudding.

In the Grade SA Fillies Classic over 1800m Magic School took the lead early on and was only caught close home by Summer Pudding and Marygold, going down to the winner by two lengths.

This time she will jump from No 1 draw, is the best-weighted runner by at least 4kg and has placed in both of her runs on the track.

Dennis Schwarz retains the ride and she looks a banker in all bets.

A second banker comes up in Race 6 where Mike de Kock saddles Al Ragnar in a Middle Stakes over 2600m. He only won his maiden last time out but that was his first run after having been gelded and he won with such authority that it’s clear there is more to come.

Interestingly, in his previous race which was over 2400m at the Vaal, he finished a 3.75-length second behind

Out Of Your League who last weekend won the Grade 1 SA Derby.
