New territory for Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs are struggling in ninth place in this season’s PSL log but get a chance to start afresh this evening when they play their opening group match in CAF Champions League.

Kaizer Chiefs get a chance this evening to set aside some of the miseries of their PSL season and strike out in a new direction as they debut in the group phase of the African Champions League.

Their match at Soccer City against Horoya marks their first in Group C and is included in today’s TAB Soccer 10 pool, as well Soccer 6 and 4 bets.

Their scheduled opening fixture against Wydad Casablanca was cancelled when the Morocco government refused them visas for fears of the highly contagious South African variant of the coronavirus.

Chiefs should be awarded those points, although it now appears that the match will be played at a neutral venue in Burkina Faso this Sunday.

Horoya, from Conakry in Guinea, are no strangers to South Africa and were responsible just two years ago for halting Mamelodi Sundowns’ progress in CAF Champions League. They had previously also got the better of Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

The Guinean team benefit from a rich owner, who has brought in many players from elsewhere in West Africa and made them into a regional powerhouse. But Chiefs could still get the better of them and lift themselves out of the funk that has seen them go six games without a victory.

Coach Gavin Hunt continues to struggle to find the right combinations in his team selection and has seen several poor finishing and clumsy defensive errors prove costly.

But Chiefs will have a fresh mindset for this new adventure and that’s a positive which can push them to success tonight, plus have a positive impact for their next PSL fixtures.

Sundowns were also supposed to play tonight, but similar fears in Algeria over COVID-19 led to the cancellation of their trip to take on Chabab Belouizdad. The match is now scheduled for Sunday.
