Kambole still failing to impress Hunt

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has revealed the reasons behind the failure of Zambian striker, Lazarous Kambole (right) to break into the starting team since joining Amakhosi in July 2019.

When Kambole joined Chiefs, there was quite some fanfare as he had been Zesco United’s top goal-scorer in the Zambian topflight.

But the 27-year-old has been a bit of a disappointment and still fails to break into the starting team and doesn’t give very convincing displays whenever he is given a chance.

“Lazarous, for me, he’s got to do better. I don’t see enough from him at training, I brought him on (in Tuesday’s game), but he’s got to do better,” said the Amakhosi mentor.

Amakhosi were held to a goalless draw by Horoya Athletic in a Caf Champions League group match at FNB Stadium where Kambole came on for the last 15 minutes but could not make much of an impact.

“I wanted to start him but I think with the two guys (Leonardo Castro and Samir Nurkovic) – they work well together and played a lot together last year.

“So, I think in that position, we know we are obviously short but he’s got to work harder and do a little bit more without the ball as well.”

With Nurkovic still trying to get his groove back after a longterm injury layoff, and Castro not fully fit – he has also just recently returned from injury – Kambole was expected to grab the chance.

“Sometimes when you come from a different country you come with a different mentality and he’s got to work harder here.”

Kambole might get another shot at impressing Hunt when they play their second Group C match against Wydad AC at the Stade 4 Aout in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on Sunday.

London – Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes are over and the main target now is to win the Champions League, forward Sadio Mane said.

Liverpool ripped up the record books last season on the way to their first English top-flight title in 30 years, but a season marred by injuries and poor form has left the club sixth and trailing leaders Manchester City by 19 points.

“Our target from the beginning was the Champions League, the Premier League and Cup games. Now I can say it’s over for the Premier League, it’s too much,” Mane told ESPN.

“In our head, it’s always ‘never give up’ and we won’t give up, but City are a good team and they’re flying.”

“The Champions League, that is our main target, but it won’t be easy either,” he said. –
