Bafana job is a backward step for Pitso

- @SbongsKaDonga Sibongiseni Gumbi

Iknow that Caf president Patrice Motsepe meant well when he said he would do anything he could to help Safa get Pitso Mosimane back as head coach of our senior men’s national team, Bafana Bafana.

He said he could use his Motsepe Foundation to subsidise Mosimane’s salary, which would expectedly and deservedly be around R2-million a month, or even more. He deserves it because he has proven himself in the game.

What Motsepe is offering is very good because it is clear that the current Bafana coach has lost the plot and is now clutching at straws.

He spoke of developing players but when he gets a chance to do so, he runs. Can anyone tell me why he is not in charge of the Bafana team who will play in the Cosafa Cup in Durban?

He has instead opted to leave his assistant Helman Mkhalele in charge of that team, which is made up of mostly young players.

One would have felt it was a great chance for him to go and influence these youngsters so they know what he wants from them.

But, anyway I digress. The point here is that Motsepe wants his “friend” Pitso back at Bafana.

I can bet the last R35 that’s in my bank account right now that everyone would welcome Pitso as Bafana coach.

A friend of mine who is a narcissist has insisted that Motsepe’s gesture is not meant for the good of the game, but to protect Sundowns and ensure their dominance is not threatened.

His theory is that with Pitso now available, he could possibly come to one of the Soweto giants and build them into a strong team who can compete with Sundowns at every level.

“He wants Pitso unavailable for those two teams (Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates) because he knows how bad it could be for Sundowns,” says this friend, whose identity I shall keep secret to protect his image.

I also reject Motsepe’s offer. No, not because my friend’s theory makes sense but because Pitso deserves better than Bafana.

His expertise is so much higher than the level Bafana are at at the moment.

Hugo Broos was recently sent back to apologise after he complained of the lack of quality players in South Africa. He immediately came under fire. Some supported him and said we just don’t like having the truth served up in it’s raw form.

I also did not like what he said but only because I expected he would have known this before taking the job.

Now the reason I say Pitso is above Bafana is because I know he is an ambitious coach who thrives on winning. He likes winning so much that he has become a sour loser.

He needs to move forward to bigger teams with big ambitions. Coming to Bafana would be a step backwards for him.

So, Mr Motsepe, your gesture is very generous but no thanks!
