Cheers to new flavours of gin

COCKTAIL PERFECT: PINK BERRY AND SUNSET ORANGE There’s a new craze for this refreshing spirit.

Gin has evolved over the years. It’s first recorded inception was in the 16th century when it was known as genever and was made of juniper berries and malt wine.

It was later refined into what we now know as gin by professor Franciscus Sylvius in Holland.

The clear spirit was originally was developed for its medical and diuretic properties.

Those in the know say gin was produced as early as the 13th century, as documented in a Flemish manuscript.

The Dutch are still regarded as the foremost producers of this alcohol and its current name is derived from the word “genever”.

What’s referred to as the “gin craze” first took place in England around 1690 due to it being affordable and easily accessible. At the time, French brandy had been banned to support English farmers who were producing surplus amounts of corn that were used to distill gin.

Gin became cheaper than beer, leading to the rise of what were known as “Gin Palaces” that patrons could visit to indulge.

But to curb this unsavoury behaviour, as it was deemed, the government raised the price of the drink and killed off the gin palaces.

In current times the clear spirit has again become a craze.

Part of this is because it mixes well everything, especially to make cocktails.

Alcohol producers like Diageo are creating new flavours of gin that don’t require too much effort when mixing.

Beverage company Diageo recently hosted an experienti­al event introducin­g the new Gordon’s flavours to the local market.

Guests got to taste delectable cocktails made from the flavours Pink Berry and Sunset Orange through mixology classes in the ideal sunset setting of the rooftop of Hallmark House in New Doornfonte­in which has with 360 degree views of Johannesbu­rg.

The event brought together media, influencer­s and some members of the public to enjoy the brand’s new flavours.

Pink Berry has the natural sweetness of raspberry and strawberry, while Gordon’s Sunset Orange, on the other hand, is perfectly crafted to balance the refreshing taste of Gordon’s with fresh juicy orange notes.

Now with the arrival of these two new flavours, perfect for summer, you can impress your friends by serving Mzansi’s favourite gin with tonic, ice and the appropriat­e wedges of fruit.

These 35% ABV gin spirit aperitifs are available for purchase from a range of local retailer partners.
