2 128 Bekkersdal residents sign up

A total of 2 128 people who visited 12 registration stations in the troubled Bekkersdal area of the West Rand last weekend, have been registered to vote in next year’s general elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said.

This was despite intimidation by some residents who vowed to stop IEC officials from working during the two-day registration drive. Bekkersdal has been fairly quiet this week, after residents demanded in violent protests that the Westonaria local municipality be placed under administration. –
