Mubarak’s trial resumes in-camera

- Cairo

– The retrial of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resumed on Saturday in Cairo at a closed session, with the court deciding to hold more such hearings for testimony from ex-officials.

Mubarak is being retried on charges of failing to prevent the killing of more than 800 peaceful protesters in the uprising that ended his rule of nearly 30 years in 2011.

Habib al-Adly, who served as interior minister under Mubarak, and six former security chiefs also face the same charges.

An army helicopter arrived with Mubarak aboard more than two hours behind schedule at the court building in the Police Academy due to heavy fog.

The 85-year-old has been staying at a Cairo military hospital serving house arrest since his release from prison in a corruption case in August.

It is not clear yet if he will be allowed to go free after a state of emergency – under which his house arrest was enforced – ended on Thursday.

Ex-prime minister Ahmed Nazif testified at Saturday’s hearing, said state-run newspaper

without giving further details.

Nazif served as prime minister from 2004 until early 2011 when Mubarak sacked the cabinet to try to end mass protests against his rule. Mubarak was eventually forced to step down in February 2011.

Mubarak and his sons, Alaa and Gamal, face additional charges of squandering public money. –
