Metro police car drinker still a mystery

- Steven Tau

The picture showing a woman in the driver’s seat of a metro police vehicle parked at a car wash, seems to have been taken somewhere in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni Metro Police said yesterday.

The picture, above, which caused a public outcry, shows the woman drinking alcohol while seated in the state vehicle.

Speaking to The Citizen, Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said details about the incident were still sketchy.

“An investigation is currently under way but we are yet to determine exactly what happened.

“We have only become aware of the incident and have since referred the matter to our integrity and standards department,” said Kgasago.

He said police had only been able to communicate with the culprit through Facebook and were looking for her contact details.

“We will have to interview the culprit because what she did was irresponsible and as an adult she will have to explain herself, as well as tell us who was driving the vehicle on the day.

“The person who was using the state-marked vehicle on the day will also have to face the music because he or she should know that you cannot leave a car, and in this instance a state car unattended, because it may get damaged.

That is being irresponsible with council property and warrants some form of discipline,” he said.

Asked if a case has been formally registered, Kgasago said they were still seeking legal advice.

On Monday afternoon, Tshidi Ford posted a message of apology on Facebook which read: “My humble apologies to all. I have caused a stir by sneaking into EMPD car while it was being washed an took pics. I’m really sorry, didn’t mean any harm.”
