Anderson could yet play for SA

TALKS: DAVIS CUP RETURN POSSIBLE FOR BIG SERVER TSA trying to get a sponsor on board before Group II clash.

Kevin Anderson’s possible return to Davis Cup action hinges on late discussions, but the big-serving South African looks set for an appearance at next year’s Rio Olympics.

Though he had not yet committed himself to the Davis Cup Euro-Africa Group II play-off against Ireland in Centurion next month, Anderson confirmed yesterday he was still in discussions with Tennis SA (TSA).

The US-based player, ranked No 14 in the world, has not played a Davis Cup tie in nearly four years.

“There have been some developments and we’re in the process of chatting through that,” Anderson said.

Gavin Crookes, TSA president and acting chief executive, admitted the federation could not cover the costs required by Anderson, though they were still in search of a sponsor to lure the nation’s top player.

“We have until 10 days before the tie to name our team to play Ireland,” Crookes said.

“We are doing all we can to secure a sponsor for Kevin to secure him as part of the team.”

Anderson, however, said discussions, which were set to continue late yesterday, revolved around more than financial constraints. “I don’t know the full details yet, but I have assessed my schedule and there are a few moving factors, so it’s not just about that.”

Anderson has played five Davis Cup ties since his debut against Finland in April 2008, winning nine of his 10 matches.

Needing to make himself available for the Davis Cup competition this year and next, in order to qualify for the Rio Olympics, TSA said it would accept his most recent proposal.

This could pave his way to the Games, regardless of whether he turns out against Ireland.

“Anderson has voiced his commitment to his country of birth and TSA... will support and agree to sanction him to play in next year’s Olympics,” the federation said.
