MAHINDRA ADDITION: RELIABLE AND HARDY

- Own correspondent

Mahindra South Africa has introduced a new version of its Genio single-cab bakkie. The single-cab Genio Plus joins the existing line-up of single-cab and double-cab Genio models, but features an extended list of standard features.

The Genio Plus is based on the reliable and hardy Genio single-cab and retains the aerodynamic cab design, comfortable and well-equipped interior and the large corrugated cargo box, with a carrying capacity in excess of 1 000kg.

Adding further appeal to those is a package of extras that include a front bull bar, rear bumper, side steps, a front cab-mounted rollbar and a rear, tailgate-side rollbar, all supplied by LA Sport.

In addition, the cargo box is rubberised, while the Genio Plus rides on smart alloy wheels.

These additional features add further value and functionality to the standard Genio’s offering, while highlighting that there’s more to this versatile vehicle than utility.

An independent, double-wishbone front suspension, coupled to a leaf-sprung rear suspension, delivers an optimum combination of car-like ride quality and cargo carrying capacity.

The spacious cabin features two individual seats sporting comfortable, durable cloth upholstery, while the dashboard is home to a full complement of instruments.

The white-faced dials are ergonomically grouped together in a binnacle ahead of the driver and clearly visible through the generously proportioned steering wheel.

A centre console is fitted with dual cup holders, while a centrally mounted digital clock is located above the generous air vents.

The centre stack is occupied by a double-DIN audio system, incorporating a FM stereo receiver, CD player, SD card slot and USB flash drive socket. The system is also MP3 capable.

The Genio Plus boasts an extensive standard equipment list that includes electrically adjustable windows and exterior mirrors, fog lamps, air-conditioning, central locking and power steering. An ABS anti-lock braking system ensures safe emergency braking.

Powering the Genio Plus is Mahindra’s mHawk 2.2 litre common-rail turbodiesel engine.

The four-cylinder unit has a maximum output of 88kW at 4 000rpm, linked to a torque peak of 290Nm sustained between 1 800rpm and 2 600rpm. Drive is to the rear wheels via a slick-shifting five-speed manual gearbox.

Combined-cycle fuel consumption is a claimed 7.9 litres/100km, allowing an operating range in excess of 900km from the 74-litre petrol tank.

Consumption drops to a claimed 7.1 litres/100km during open-road cruising. The CO2 emissions rating is at 210g/km.

The Mahindra Genio Plus is now on sale for R209 995. –
