Majmu draws No 1 for July

READY: THIS WILL BE HER THIRD RUN AFTER A LAYOFF AND SHOULD BE AT HER PEAK

- Jack Milner

Kwinta will be all the rage but has her problems.

With Gavin Lerena churning out winners in a race for his first champion jockey title, Kwinta is likely to find lots of support in Race 6 at the Vaal tomorrow, a MR 87 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1200m on the outside turf track.

It is no secret trainer Stanley Ferreira has a high opinion of this Kahal filly who was well supported in her winning debut in December last year. She went off at 12-10 to win her next start but got a little out of her ground before running on strongly to finish a 0.50-length second behind Captain’s Diva.

Her third run was in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas at Turffontein but after being handily placed turning for home could not find a finishing burst but still did well to finish sixth, just 3.10 lengths behind Siren’s Call.

Kwinta was then rested and when she reappeared last month over 1400m on the Vaal turf, the money poured on and she eventually went off a 6-10 favourite. She looked a winner with 200m to run but started to hang out and was touched off by Peep Show. However, Kwinta had caused interference to third-placed Future Fantastic and was relegated after a successful objection.

This tendency to hang under pressure is a concern and it might be worth looking elsewhere for better value. That could well lie with Corne Spies-trained Jo Malone, who has run against some very good opposition. This Tiger Ridge filly won her second start and then took on the colts in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes and finished a five-length third behind Banaadeer.

A few weeks later she ran in the Grade 3 Pretty Polly Stakes where she took on a very strong field of two-year-old fillies in a race won by Majmu, with Flame Cat second and Carry On Alice in third. Jo Malone was fourth but finished 3.50 lengths behind Carry On Alice, giving 3kg to Sean Tarry’s charge.

She was out of action for more than a year and made her comeback at Flamingo Park last month finishing a 7.50-length fourth behind Wolf In Winter and followed up this month with a 2.75-length fourth to Bold Approach over 1200m on the Vaal sand. This will be her third run after the layoff and Jo Malone should be in peak condition. The stable is in form and stable jockey Fanie Chambers is in the irons.

The Mike de Kock stable sends out two runners in Love To Sail and Glenshee. The former has won two of three starts, her only loss coming behind Bilateral in last year’s Grade 1 Golden Slipper. If close to her best she has to be a contender but has not raced since November.

Glenshee is fit and off a light weight must have a chance.
