Snaith could hold the upper hand

- Jack Milner

Once again runners from the Justin Snaith yard look set to dominate a feature in Port Elizabeth, with Acrostar and Cat And The Moon looking the pair to beat in the Listed Jockey Club Stakes for fillies and mares over 2000m on the Fairview turf track today.

There are 11 runners carded to go to post and Snaith trains three of them, while Alan Greeff will saddle five and Dorrie Sham two. Yvette Bremner sends out the 11th runner.

All the runners will carry 58kg and that puts the Snaith duo on the top of the pile. Both are proven over the distance but with Richard Fourie taking the ride of Acrostar, the six-year-old Danehill Dancer mare looks to be the stable elect.

She has only run once over 2000m but that was in a Grade 2 race at Greyville last year – the Gold Bracelet – in which she ran on strongly to finish a 0.55-length third behind Gallica Rose. Her last three races have all been in features at Kenilworth, including a fifth and a fourth behind talented Chevauchee in the Olympic Duel Stakes and Ladies Mile respectively. After that she finished 3.80 lengths behind Harlem Shake in the Grade 3 Final Fling Stakes over 1800m.

Just 0.60 lengths in front of her in the Harlem Shake race was Cat And The Moon but the fiveyear-old daughter of Black Minnaloushe is now 1kg worse off so there does not appear to be much between the pair.

Cat And The Moon won the Winter Oaks over 2200m in soft going in 2014 so will also not be worried about the distance.

Also in her favour is that she has won at the course while Acrostar has yet to race at Fairview. Snaith has engaged Muzi Yeni for the ride.

Greeff is in hot form and with Greg Cheyne aboard Jam Tart, she looks the best fancied of his quintet. However, Sensuous Sally (Raymond Danielson) could provide better value.
