SABC probe should be a priority
Communications Minister Faith Muthambi’s attempt to allay fears about a crisis at SABC is a classic example of the ANC’s many attempts to diminish its responsibility for disarray in many of its malfunctional departments.
Just as the ANC has not learned any lessons from its losses in the August municipal elections, it continues to domineer any attempt at a probe into the state broadcaster.
Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the chief operating officer of the SABC, in concert with the minister, pictured, said, “Then I say, why should I listen to you because you don’t pay us”.
His remark, alongside the ministers, is staggering, given the fact the state broadcaster is funded by taxpayers’ money, and it clearly shows the arrogance of both these individuals in expressing contempt for parliament’s calls for an inquiry into the “chaos” at the SABC.
There is undoubtedly a problem at the SABC, given the seven journalists that were recently fired and then reinstated. Aside from the poor state of its finances, the SABC has budgeted R40 million for legal fees.
If this is not a strident call for an investigation, then what is?
