DECK-TO-DECK DUST UP Who will come out tops in the ultimate face-off?
MTV (DStv channel 130), MTV Base (DStv channel 322) and Cadbury 5Star are bringing you the hottest DJ line-up in Jozi at the MTV DJ Battle, taking place at Carfax, Newtown today. The ultimate face-off will see MTV Base captain Heavy K and his team of heavyweights, Fistaz Mixwell and DJ Switch, go up against Team MTV, with captain Vigilante and spin masters Ph and ZanD in a memorable head-to-head battle. “The most exciting thing is working with guys I haven’t worked with but known from a distance, and knowing how to work together,” said DJ Fistaz, adding that fans can expect a lot of inventiveness from his side. “People can look forward to exciting improvisation because we will be working with themes. Me and my team sat down and spoke about what we need to do.” MTV captain DJ Vigilante says the battle will allow them to step out of their comfort Zone and go back to the basics of DJ’ing. “Fans should expect something different. I have to do my homework. On this one I truly need to think outside the box and deliver something unexpected and far from usual,” he explained. The protagonists agree that this is not your typical DJ battle, but a clash that will leave fans amazed. “It’s the new guys doing amazing work and us, the guys who have being in DJing for some time,” Fistaz pointed out.
“I like the new talent. It compels us to adjust or die. I’m constantly doing research so that I can be up to date with the new sound,” Vigilante said, adding that music for him is a way of life; a universal language. “You can go anywhere on the continent and communicate with anyone through it. With music, we all get along. It connects us people.”
Fistaz explains that his affair with music started a long time ago and his love for it hasn’t waned.
“At first it was just being naughty; being a student in high school and not wanting to study. At varsity I found myself in record shops and varsity radio. I knew that what I wanted to do with my life had something to do with music,” he said.
While Vigilante explains that he respects all of his DJ battle competitors for their diverse skills, Fistaz feels that ZanD from the MTV team is a threat. “He is very technical and clued up. He knows music and I like his style.”
And just when you thought the MTV DJ Battle couldn’t get any more interesting, sexy ‘Wololo’ dance sensation Babes Wodumo will make a guest appearance, while Yfm’s Ayanda MVP is the official MC.
Each battle will feature three DJs representing MTV and three DJs flying the flag for MTV Base. They will square up in a series of deck-to-deck battles as they strive to out-mix, out-play and out-party each other.
Wild card challenges will also be thrown into the mix and the audience will decide who will walk away with the title.
