Several universities will remain closed throughout the country, following the #FeesMustFall protests by students.

But the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has committed to remaining open.

This is despite the torching of a building at the Pietermaritzburg campus during the recent volatile student protests.

“The decision was made in the best interests of the majority of the students,” UKZN said.

“Management has been open to constructive engagement with the student leadership in an effort to addressing their grievances.

“Regarding concerns relating to fee increments, no decision has been made and council will only finalise this in October.

“It is imperative we continue with the academic programme, as any further loss of time will impact on our ability to successfully complete the academic year.”

Institutions that have shut their doors include the universities of Cape Town and Pretoria. The North West University’s Vaal and Mafikeng campuses, and the Vaal University of Technology will remain closed until October 10.

In Nelson Mandela Bay, recent dialogues with the students to assess whether to reopen the institution, had ended in a stalemate.

The University of the Free State will reopen today.

Both the Tshwane and Durban universities of technology had also seen their fair share of protests, resulting in a shutdown.
