Hlaudi Motsoeneng says he will apply for his former position as chief operating officer (COO) at the SABC when it is advertised.

Motsoeneng made this statement after the newly-appointed acting CEO of the SABC James Aguma and board chairperson Prof Mbulaheni Maguvhe announced that he will go back to his previous position as group executive of corporate affairs.

“I am going to apply for the position (COO), I qualify for the job,” said Motsoeneng.

He said he was happy to return to his old position as group executive of corporate affairs and that everything happens for a reason.

“When there is darkness I see the light. I am going to turn that position into something more exciting than what it is supposed to be. Provinces will occupy the space and not Auckland Park as I will be dealing with provinces. I will make sure that all provinces and all 11 South African official languages are catered for,” said Motsoeneng.

He said negative reports about him were perpetuated by people with malicious intent who had not read the ruling by Judge Dennis Davis of the Western Cape High Court.

“I was not produced by the media, I have my own brain and my own vision, I want to repeat that my future is in my own hands,” he said.

Maguvhe said Motsoeneng did well for the organisation and raised funds for it.

Also, local content is being preferred, which is benefiting society and artists.

“When we advertise (the COO position) if he so wishes he can apply. Nothing stops him from applying. I would like society and especially opposition parties not to interfere with SABC processes because they are the ones that are destabilising this organisation,” said Maguvhe.

He said there is a perception that is being created by an opposition party (DA) and media that SABC does not respect the legal institutions.

“I want to put the record straight. We respect our legal institutions, including the public protector’s office and our courts.

“The public protector wanted us to institute a disciplinary hearing against our COO and we adhered to that. We instituted that disciplinary and Mr Motsoeneng was cleared.

“Unfortunately, when things don’t go your way, you think that processes were not followed. Because after that disciplinary hearing the DA said it was a whitewash, but when the DA win cases we, as the board and myself, don’t cry and say it was a whitewash.

“Why should people cry when things are not in their favour?” Maguvhe said.

He said the judgment made by Davis “stated categorically that Mr Motsoeneng can hold any position at SABC, including that of COO, if requirements are met and due processes have been followed” and that it does not say “he should be fired”. –
