Globalisation and greed are to blame for gap

n his piece, Davos: the rich are worried, Gwynne Dyer barely scratches the surface. Doing so makes it simpler to have a dig at “Trump and the other populists”.

While automation – simple robotics and not “artificial intelligence” – is fast replacing human labour in many fields, globalisation and greed are the key ingredients.

The PC liberal brigade, who push the “globalisation” and “equality” (what a misnomer) agendas are the ones who got rich by doing so, and continue increasing the gap between themselves and the average citizen.

Look around and see the empty, bankrupt, or underutilised manufacturing plants.

If it is cheaper to produce the goods in a poor country with lower labour costs and import them, they will do so.

If it is cheaper to allow immigrants in to perform the work for lower wages, they will do so.

If it is cheaper to automate, and claim the tax breaks, they will do so – particularly when it lowers production costs and enables exports, while not passing saving on to the consumers.

Make extra profits, claim all sorts of special tax breaks, and thus put little extra back into the economy but a lot extra into their bank accounts.

It is all about “shareholder value”, but them and their ilk are the shareholders.

Then the CO types get a chunk of those increased profits in bonuses and fat salaries.
