Komphela’s goal greed

KOMPHELA: COACH CALLS ON AMAKHOSI PLAYERS TO BE MORE CLINICAL Chiefs mentor satisfied with new signing Paez after his debut against Free State Stars.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela would like his team to be more clinical and score more goals in their matches as they seek to keep their winning streak going and push for the Absa Premiership title.

Amakhosi registered their third successive league win with a 3-1 defeat of Free State Stars at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, and Komphela felt they could have scored more. The goals were scored by club veterans, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker and Willard Katsande while Ea Lla

Koto’s was netted by Rooi Mahamutsa.

The win took Chiefs to within a point of league leaders, Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City.

“We could have made (the scoreline) even better, but there were moments towards the end of the first half where we could feel them coming through.

“Maybe I have to go back and look with less emotion. But as is, I felt we could have done better. Yes, we won it, we are happy, but we could have done better,” said Komphela after the match.

He will hope his new Venezuelan signing, Gustavo “Maleven” Paez will be more clinical, and commended the 26-year-old on his debut performance.

“I’m sure you could see some glimpses of somebody who has qualities or attributes of a good striker, and we are happy. With time he will get there.

“Having worked with him and knowing what he is capable of, if I were to rate him out of 10 I would give him a five or five and half,” said Komphela.

“There is a ball which I thought he would have done better to pass and he took a shot, but he is a striker and always looking to score. But it will not always happen,”

The Glamour Boys’ next assignment is against Maritzburg United, another team Komphela has coached, on Saturday night at Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium.

The 49-year-old mentor said it was another match for which he has to prepare without much knowledge of the opponents.

“Like Stars, they have a new coach and some new players. Roger de Sa has had almost four weeks to work with the team and there is not much we know about them now. We will have to prepare our own way,” he said.
