It’s in our hands, says Komphela

WE HAVE TO KEEP WINNING OUR GAMES Sundowns have five matches in hand, but ‘it’s not cut and dried’.

Steve Komphela believes Kaizer Chiefs have to keep winning and forget about other teams if they are to put in a serious challenge for the Absa Premiership title this season.

Chiefs are third with 30 points from 17 games. They are four points ahead of champions Mamelodi Sundowns who, however, have five games in hand.

But Komphela believes his side have to keep winning to make it difficult for the Brazilians to catch up.

“It’s a highly competitive league,” said Komphela. “You win a match and jump two or three places. You win two and you are suddenly top of the league.”

He said Sundowns will have their job cut out for them when they have to play catch-up, saying it will test their character to the limit.

“Catching up comes with its problems because you are dealing with teams who already have the points.

“The best thing for us to do is win our matches and wait for them. Sundowns have five games to play and you don’t pick up your points … in five matches a lot can happen. Add the points and make it difficult for them,” said the 49-year-old.

Amakhosi have been on a good run, picking up full points in their last four matches and Komphela hopes for the same when they host Highlands Park at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium this evening.

“We have seen them play. It’s quite clear what Gordon Igesund is doing. And where they are now makes matters worse but we should be ready for them.

“They are fighting for their lives and that makes them more dangerous. They are a threat up front. They are dangerous going forward and if you don’t control them there, you are in trouble. Where they are (in the table) is not a true reflection of who they are,” he said.

The Lions of the North are second from bottom with 14 points, and as Komphela expects should throw everything at them. A win for Igesund’s team would just be what they need to reignite their season and take them up at least two places.
