Officer jailed for murder

A 29-year-old police constable has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said yesterday.

Constable MN Njeya, who was stationed at Norwood police station, was convicted of murder in November last year and sentenced on Thursday in a high court sitting in Palmridge. Njeya was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

National Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said that on November 1, 2016, at about 8.30pm Njeya was off-duty and drinking with his flatmates. He went into the bedroom to join his girlfriend, Kelebogile Kwababa, and after a while she screamed for help.”

While the witnesses were standing outside the bedroom, they heard three gunshots coming from the bedroom.”

Dlamini said the constable came out with a gun and instructed the witnesses to stand back. “The paramedics and the police were called and she was certified dead. The accused was then arrested.”
