Thanda in Bucks’ sights
Mthatha Bucks are hoping to continue where University of Pretoria left off when they play National First Division (NFD) leaders Thanda Royal Zulu tomorrow.
Last weekend, AmaTuks were the first team to inflict defeat on Amabhubesi, and now Amathol’amnyama believe it is their chance. Ian Palmer’s team hope Thanda will still be reeling but are also aware of a backlash.
A win will potentially see Bucks go third depending on other results, but the Eastern Cape team have pledged to push for a promotion place.
Bucks have three former Thanda players – Mazwi Mncube, Petrus Ngebo and Madumedja Khwinana – who will be looking to prove a point or two.
Palmer, who signed in January, replacing Eddy Dyaloyi, said the team have to be focused throughout the 90 minutes.
“The only way for us to approach the rest of the season is to make every game a cup final,” said the former Maritzburg United mentor.
Palmer said he had had to work on players’ mental strength to ensure they stay focused and don’t fade as the match progresses.
“We will need to put more focus on our defending. It’s good for players to have the freedom when attacking, but they must be aware of their defensive responsibilities as well. They must know what their responsibilities are and be focussed and disciplined,” he said.
Black Leopards will get a stern test today as they face Stellenbosch FC. Lidoda Duvha have been on a good run lately which has seen them climb up to second on the table and cut Thanda’s lead to seven points.
Royal Eagles will also look to get back to winning ways when they host struggling Santos at the Harry Gwala Stadium today.
