UNIQUE ITEMS UP FOR GRABS ʂ There will be something for everyone on the lot.
Variety and unique will be the buzz words at the upcoming art and collectables auction at Bernardi’s in Pretoria on Saturday at 10am. Local paintings and sculpture, interesting and worthwhile books, attractive utilitarian furniture and embellishments, complimented by eclectic European porcelain and glassware, silver and electroplate, Afrikaner curiosities and memorabilia, as well as select estate jewellery will entice discerning buyers.
The selection of books on South African art, travel and exploration, architecture, cultural and history include scarce works like Patriot Woordeboek, Eerste Uitgaaf (1902) and Ererol 1899-1902. The Ladysmith siege 2nd Novr. 1899 1st March 1900.
The three volume finely embellished and well-illustrated, Juliana Bijbel, in typical Art Nouveau overtones and a selection of the limited edition Brenthurst Press series will also go under the hammer.
Six works by WH Coetzer include wellknown Drakensberg landscapes, a Magoebaskloof scene and two scarce etchings. The haunting Women bracing the Southeaster by Eleanor Esmonde-White and her definitive still life illustrates the diversity of the artist.
Contemporary sculptures suited for interiors are Running Cheetah by Jo Roos, three small African wonderstone heads by Zimbabwean artist Joseph Muzondo, Ike Nkoane’s figure group Calling for Rain, Phil Minnaar’s charming Vlakvark, the striking Rearing Stallion by Danie de Jager and a rare stone sculpture, Mother and Child, by Fr Frans Claerhout, which clearly exhibits the Belgian expressionist influence in his work.
The 116 lots of porcelain, crystal, silverware, copper and brass will appeal to every pocket, with a generous selection of Royal The first session will be on Saturday. Books bidding will start at 10am, followed by South African art and sculptures at 11:30am, with furniture, embellishments, jewellery and numismatics at 12:30pm.
Viewing is today is until 5pm, and again tomorrow from 8am to 10pm.

An 18ct gold and ruby set ring, a white gold .51ct diamond ring and a classic diamond and sapphire set ring are highlights among the selection of estate jewellery.
