We were too complacent, says Pitso

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane (above) says his side suffered from complacency in the opening stages of their 2-1 victory over Ugandan champions Kampala City Capital Authority.

The Brazilians were 2-0 up in the opening six minutes, but lost their momentum to allow the visitors to grab an away goal going into the second-leg tie to be played on March 18.

“It was a difficult game, we started very well but we didn’t finish well. It was too easy for us in the first 15 minutes and the mentality changed and we thought it was one of those days. It is a good lesson, we must learn, but we have enough experience. The good thing is that we kept our consistency when playing at home where we score more than one goal here every time.

“They played their part, they did exceptionally well to show that they wanted to win the match but I don’t think we are in trouble,” said Mosimane.

The coach is confident that the Brazilians will advance to the group stages, but however admits it will be an uphill battle as they will be playing on an artificial turf.

“The negative side is the goal against us, maybe we like it the hard way. We have to go there and fight and overturn the result, we have the capacity to deal with that game … we have the personnel.

“We should be cautious and roll up our sleeves because it is not an easy game on an artificial pitch, it is going to be tough. The mentality must be right, and we don’t have to win.

“It is also not going to be an easy game for them either because they will have to push everybody up front to score, then we can play on the break. We just have to defend well,” stressed the former Bafana Bafana coach.

He added: “The away goal will do the job only if they score at home and if we don’t score. We have ourselves to blame to put ourselves in this position and we need to take ourselves out of that position.”
