Drama as Riky splits with label

- Tshepiso Makhele

It all started with Riky Rick’s acceptance speech for the best hit single award at this year’s Metro FM Awards, where the popular rapper indicated how unhappy he was about the awards, just before his microphone went mute and the artist left the stage, refusing to state further what it was exactly that ticked him off.

His outburst raised red flags about the credibility of the awards.

After weeks of speculation that the rapper has left his stable, Mabala Noise, whose artists dominated the categories for which they were nominated at the awards, Riky Rick took to Twitter yesterday, making it official that he has indeed left the stable. He gave his reasons for leaving and in one tweet insinuated that he couldn’t “sell his soul” by staying at the record label.

“Dear friends and fam, The past couple weeks have been hectic. The Metro speech was a moment of clarity for me. Brought me back to reality,” he tweeted. “After a long prayer and conversation with God, I am no longer part of @ Mabala_Noise. Blessings to everyone there. Thank you for the love.”

The star, however, said that he had not thought his comment at the awards would bring about the consequences they had.

“I didn’t think about the consequences or who would get mad. I just wanted to do the right thing, inspire the kids to not be slaves to ‘them’” he jotted down.

According to sources, Mabala Noise has taken back everything they had given the Sidlukotini hitmaker when they signed the deal with him last year.

“At this point they have taken back what they think makes me happy. They have threatened the future of me and my family. They want us gone,” the artist explained. “You might see all this material s**t and think it makes life easier. It doesn’t. Money is just an illusion to keep us making dumb decisions.”

The rumour mill indicates that Mabala Noise allegedly sponsored the Metro FM Awards by a whopping R10 million, resulting in its artists walking away with most of the awards at the Metro FM ceremony.

Efforts to reach Riky Rick yesterday were unsuccessful and his manager’s phone went unanswered.
