Fleck’s efforts pay dividends

- Rudolph Jacobs

With a bye to follow last weekend’s convincing display against the Kings in Port Elizabeth, Stormers Super Rugby coach Robbie Fleck (above) believes their risky manoeuvres on attack are starting to bear fruit.

The Stormers remain unbeaten after their 41-10 win over the Kings and now have two weeks to plan their next move before facing the Sunwolves in Singapore.

“We are going to put ourselves under a bit more pressure with a bit of high risk, it is where we are going,” said Fleck.

“But we are pleased with the overall outcome with the bonus point and 41 points.”

The six tries the Stormers have scored have raised their tally to 15 after three matches, an average of five a match which is a big upward trend from the try-shy Stormers teams of the last two seasons.

“We want to keep ball-in-hand and put teams under pressure,” said Fleck. “But to be fair, well played to the Kings who came up with one or two clever plans.”

Fleck could also hardly hide his excitement about the form displayed by three of the debutants he sent on in the second half.

“The likes of loose forward Jaco Coetzee, scrumhalf Justin Phillips and utility back Damian Willemse at the end were outstanding,” said Fleck.

“It just shows the kind of youth that we have got coming through and that we are prepared to back these youngsters.”

But Fleck added that his team are still a work in progress and while he expressed his satisfaction with what they have achieved so far, he said there’s still a long way to go.

“We have made major strides in terms of our game,” he said.
