New engines for Tiguan

NEW POWERFUL ENGINES ADDED TO VOLKSWAGEN’S EXISTING MODEL LINE-UP

Three diesel powerplants and a petrol variant set to complete this offering.

Volkswagen has added three diesel engines and one petrol variant to the Tiguan model lineup. At launch, the new Tiguan was only available in two 1.4 TSI engines (92kW and 110kW).

The new added engines are the 2.0 TDI with a power output ranging from 81kw to 130kW, and the range-topping 2.0 TSI petrol engine with a 162kW power output. The high-powered engines, 2.0 TDI with 105kW, 2.0 TDI with 130kW and 2.0 TSI with 162kW are offered with the improved 4Motion all-wheel system.

At the heart of the system is an inter-axle differential – a fifth generation Haldex coupling – that shares power between the front and rear axle, sending it where it’s most needed. The differential is designed to work with the car’s other active safety systems, like the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the electronic stability programme (ESP).

The ground clearance of all Tiguan 4Motion versions is 10mm higher at 201mm. In addition, the Tiguan can be ordered with an “off-road” package, that has a special off-road front end providing an approach angle of 25.6o, instead of the usual 18.3o. The departure angle at the rear is 24.7o for all versions, while the ramp angle is 20o. Regardless of whether the vehicle has an on-road or off-road front-end design, the new Tiguan is engineered for very large trailer loads of up to 2 200kg – depending on engine/gearbox choice.

New on this generation of Tiguan is the high-spec 4Motion Active Control. The rotary/push-button switch on the centre console allows the driver to activate one of four driving modes. Turning the switch to the left allows for the selection of one of two road profiles: Onroad or Snow. To the right, the Offroad (automatic setting of offroad parameters) or Offroad Individual (variable settings) can be selected.
