Sundowns to keep run going

- Thembinkosi Sekgaphane

Former Sundowns and Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer believes the depth of the squad available to Pitso Mosimane gives the Brazilians the edge in Saturday night’s Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium.

“It is going to be a close game but Sundowns will pull it off, the experience will help them go through,” said Kannemeyer.

Sundowns have been in excellent form again this season, though they have slipped up a little in the league of late, failing to win any of their past three matches. Chiefs have been enjoying a resurgence after a below-par start to the seasons followed a 2015/2016 campaign they would like to for- get in a hurry. Despite both teams having registered draws in their last league matches, Saturday’s game is expected to live up to its billing.

“Pitso keeps the style of play the same – he changes players because he has depth. I would say Chiefs didn’t have a bad season last season ... Chiefs are a big club and everyone needed time to settle. Steve got the best out of players this season, they have adapted to his philosophy,” added Kanermeyer.

“This game could be a league decider, If Chiefs win they will be in a better place on the league table, obviously. For Sundowns it means they are catching up and getting a chance to close the gap.

“I still think both of them have a chance to win the league, in my opinion, Sundowns have games in hand ... that doesn’t equal points, but they can still challenge for it. Chiefs are playing well this season so they are also in the running.”

Sundowns have certainly had the better of Chiefs in recent seasons – Amakhosi last beat the Brazilians in a league game at the end of April 2015. Sundowns beat Chiefs twice at home last season, in the Absa Premiership and Telkom Knockout, while the league game at FNB Stadium finished goalless. Sundowns beat Chiefs 2-1 at home in the Absa Premiership this season in November, with Sibusiso Vilakazi netting the winning goal.
