SuperSport United hungry for trophies

- Michaelson Gumede

SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter says his team are prioritising every tournament they are competing in this season.

The capital city side have established themselves as strong contenders for Absa Premiership honours following their 19-game unbeaten run in the league, which leaves the three-time league champions third, just two points behind leaders Cape Town City.

Matsatsantsa have also advanced to the round of 32 and last16 of the Caf Confederation Cup and the Nedbank Cup respectively.

“Every time you play, you want to go as far as you can go. Yes, it will stretch the squad and we have been in situations where we saw how difficult it is to compete both on the domestic front and battle on the continental front. But that is the challenge that we have and we are not complaining,” said Baxter.

With goalkeepers such as Reyaad Pieterse, Ronwen Williams, Boalefa Pule and national Under-20 No 1 Mondli Mpoto, Baxter is somewhat spoilt for choice in that department. The Scot encourages competition among his goalkeepers, saying the No 1 spot is up for grabs.

“Pule has played very well in the couple of games he has played, Reyaad has been improving. He started a bit dodgily but has come around well. Mondli was at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, and before we went into the international break I wanted him to have a game. So now all the keepers are available and it all goes down to who wants the jersey the most,” said the former Bafana Bafana coach.

“We try to rotate our players, but what happens is, if we do that too much, we start to lose continuity. I don’t want that.”
