Safa drag their heels over coach

ASSOCIATION CANNOT MAKE UP THEIR MINDS

- Jonty Mark

SuperSport deny any approach for Stuart Baxter.

Areasonable week for Bafana Bafana remains somewhat overshadowed by the South African Football Association’s apparent inability to find the senior national team a permanent head coach.

Safa have spouted so many empty promises since February over when the new man will be announced that it is now hard to believe anything they say.

“We hope it will be soon after the Angola match,” was Safa president Danny Jordaan’s latest effort, but there is little indication that the association have an agreement with anyone.

Carlos Queiroz and Herve Renard look to have proved too expensive, a reported deal with Ruud Krol is yet to materialise, and while there have been murmurings that Safa have been aggressively pursuing Stuart Baxter, SuperSport United have repeatedly denied any approach.

Owen da Gama was in charge in a caretaker capacity for the 3-1 win over Guinea-Bissau on Saturday and Tuesday night’s goalless draw with Angola in East London, and he does genuinely seem to have fostered a good spirit in the camp.

The main positive to draw from Saturday’s game was the return of Kamohelo Mokotjo to international duty, the FC Twente midfielder giving a fine display after having his South African citizenship hastily restored in the week leading up to the match.

Keagan Dolly also sparkled as Bafana won the game, while the promising Percy Tau scored his first goal for his country.

Bafana relied on two penalties to beat the Wild Dogs, however, and their lack of potency in front of goal was highlighted again as they could not break down a stubborn Palancas Negras.
