Kathrada’s boldness knows no bounds

-

On March 28, the Grim Reaper claimed Rivonia trial accused Ahmed Kathrada, pictured. Kathrada came from the same school of thought that Mandela, etc came from, standing in opposition to racism, which is state enemy number one.

As the winds of change swept through the world, the apartheid government refused to smell the coffee and welcome the refreshing breeze of freedom and the equality that came with it.

Although some would wish to derail the success of the nonracialism project by continuing to board the Sparrow-Momberg Express, Kathrada remained undeterred in his determination.

Uncle Kathy’s boldness knew no bounds, so much so that he bravely called for the president’s resignation last year as he realised silence can be injurious.

Kathrada understood that the hardest door to open is that to a closed mind.

He appreciated the need to stand up and be counted, even if standing up means you step on others’ toes.

He may have departed, but his lessons forever remain for our careful reflection.
