Corrupt few pose as democracy
George Bernard Shaw must have been reincarnated and moved to South Africa. His quote, “democracy substitutes election by the incompetent many for appointment by the corrupt few”, seems so apt for the state we find our beautiful country in.
The future of our land is held to ransom by the corrupt holding an employment gun to the heads of the ANC members to ensure they do not break party ranks to follow their consciences.
Doesn’t say much for the moral fibre of the ruling party and says even less for our much vaunted constitution, which ensures MPs are answerable to their party and not the electorate.
The benefits of proportional representation are negated when representatives are prevented from doing what they know in their hearts to be right; when they are forced to do things that fly in the face of a groundswell of anger among the electorate.
It is disgusting that ANC members of some stature can on one day voice strong disapproval of a corrupt elite and the next day crawl on bent knees begging for forgiveness and eat their words.
What has this country done to deserve such a ruling elite?
