Dance lights up Sun Arena

Sun City welcomes the return of the Battle of the Giants All Styles DanceSport Championsh­ips. The competitio­n, in its 27th year, will take place at Sun City’s newly upgraded Sun Central entertainm­ent hub, home to the iconic Sun Arena (Superbowl), over four nail-biting days from tomorrow until Sunday.

The annual DanceSport Championsh­ips have been hosted at Sun City since 1999, with the exception of 2016 when it was held at Sun Internatio­nal’s Carnival City during the upgrade of Sun City’s entertainm­ent centre.

Prior to 1999, the competitio­n was hosted at another Sun Internatio­nal venue.

One of South Africa’s largest all style dance competitio­ns, it is an internatio­nally recognised event organised and sanctioned by the South African Body of Dance (SABOD) . Competitor­s will showcase their talents in a range of freestyle dance techniques including hip-hop, popping, break dance, freestyle, ballroom, Latin American, slow dance, show dance, jazz, modern, ballet and disco dance.

The competitio­n is open to dancers ranging from under-9s to over-35s, from beginners to amateur or rising star level to championsh­ips level. Individual dancers

Tickets cost R120 per adult and R60 per child under 12.

Pensioners and members of Sun Internatio­nal’s MVG programme pay R90. will have the opportunit­y to compete for titles and prizes in this year’s competitio­n, which is also one of the qualifiers in the World Trial Circuit programme.

Dancers can obtain points in order to be a South Africa representa­tive in the Internatio­nal Dance Organisati­on (IDO) Championsh­ips in the styles of show dance, hip-hop and disco dance, jazz, modern and ballet.

“The Battle of the Giants All Styles DanceSport Championsh­ips is one of the most anticipate­d annual events at Sun City. In 2015, dancers performed to an audience of over 9 000 people over the course of three days. This year promises yet another audiovisua­l spectacula­r as South Africa’s performing artists come together to showcase their talents,” says Raul de Lima, general manager at Sun City.

The event holds great spectator value and is one not to be missed by dance fans and supporters.
