Quality entry for SA Nursery

- Jack Milner

Only 11 runners have been nominated for the R1-million SA Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein on Saturday 6 May but if they all accept to race, it is going to be a cracker.

Sean Tarry has entered Barrack Street, facile winner of both the Listed Storm Bird Stakes over 1000m and the Grade 3 Protea Stakes over 1100m at the course, as well as Wonderwall, who placed twice in Cape Town and then came out and beat debutant Naafer by 4.50 lengths in a 1200m race at the Vaal.

What made that run so impressive is that Naafer, trained by Mike de Kock, came out in his second start to win by 5.25 lengths and the Australian-bred son of Lonhro is another nominee for the SA Nursery.

De Kock also has entered Mustaaqeem, who probably made the most impressive debut of all the current crop of two-year-olds, beating Coastal Torrent by 7.50 lengths with jockey Callan Murray looking over his shoulder for the out-of-sight opposition 300m from home. He was also born in Australian and is by Redoute’s Choice out of South African super-sprinter National Colour.

Fillies have run well in this race, with both Carry On Alice and mercurial Cloth Of Cloud scoring for the Tarry yard. Paul Matchett has nominated Kissable, who is extremely talented but has had a few problems of late. If she is right, especially as the boys have to give her 2.5kg, she could give them all a run for their money.
