The first cold front might have come and gone, but the auctions at Old Johannesburg Warehouse Auctioneers are only heating up. This weekend there will be another exciting array of items lined up over two days of auction fun!
The auction starts on Saturday at 9.30am with an eclectic collection of antiques: lustreware, exquisite silver pieces, a large collection of Woodstock glass, beautiful ceramics, exceptional pieces of furniture (of particular mention a 19th-century Portuguese partridge-wood desk, chair and bookcase), vintage furs, Ardmore, Baccarat crystal, Bang & Olufsen hi-fi equipment, Murano glass and much more. A good selection of art books and a large collection of antique leather-bound Bibles add something for the bibliophiles too.
At 1pm, the art session commences, with 120 lots of traditional and contemporary South African and international art by the likes of Andre de Beer, Gregoire Boonzaier, Thinus de Jongh, Christopher Tugwell, Adriaan Boshoff, Christiaan Nice, Pieter van der Westhuizen, Marie Vermeulen-Breedt, Terrence McCaw, Allen Hallet, Rudolf Wening, Mervyn Peake, Kim Berman to name a few.
Two noteworthy, one-off sculptural pieces by Norman Catherine should draw a lot of attention. Both these wearable art pieces were designed for the Standard Bank Gallery group exhibition in September 2010, Translations: Art into Jewellery. (Among the artists selected were Karel Nel, Walter Oltmann, Marco Cianfanelli and Diana Hyslop). The pieces, created out of 18-carat white and yellow gold with diamonds, were expertly crafted by the renowned Schwartz Jewellers in conjunction with Norman Catherine.
This will surely have diehard collectors and beginners alike excited to add to their collections.
On Sunday, proceedings start again at 9.30am. A treasure trove of furniture, ceramics, glass, silver plate, general art and more will keep auction goers busy for hours.
Viewing for this auction is open to the public on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 May from 8.30am-4pm. On auction days, viewing is open from 8.30am until the auction commences at 9.30am.
Secure, guarded parking is available right across the road from the warehouse.
Registration for the auction is free. Industrial furniture from a printing warehouse will keep the session interesting.
As usual, the stand-alone jewellery, gemstone and watch session starts at 12 noon.
The jewellery session has 300 glittering lots waiting to adorn prospective buyers. There is an array of loose gemstones and diamonds up to 5 carats; a selection of diamond and gemstone rings; a range of earrings, bracelets, tennis bracelets and necklaces. A few noteworthy items: a pair of 2-carat protea-set diamond earrings, a 5ct round cut diamond ring, a 3.1ct loose diamond.
Watch collectors will be enticed by brands such as Omega, Frederique Constant, Longines, Gaga Milano, Michel Herbelin and more.
The session is further boosted by the addition of designer vintage handbags and purses by the likes of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors.
